Emu Drumulator Custom Sounds
I replaced the sounds of my Drumulator (it has MIDI!) way back in 1994. At the time I had to write my own custom code and reverse engineer the EPROMs. The sounds are recorded in 8-bit uLaw around 24kHz, The memory map for the sounds is fixed in the OS EPROM. I don’t know the locations in the EPROM to change to alter this. I just matched the length of the original sounds.
You can obviously mix the ROMs around but they are fixed in their sound groups as noted below. I spent many 10s of hours making these files so that the sounds fitted within the fixed sample time allotted for each sound.
- Eprom 1 -
Cymbal
- Cymbal - Eprom 2 -
ML Tom
- Mid Tom, Low Tom - Eprom 3 -
OCSC
- Open High-Hat, Closed High-Hat, Snare, Clave - Eprom 4 -
HBRCC
- High Tom, BassKick, Rim, Clap, Cowbell
I've made custom sounds from Roland TR808 and TR909, Linn LM-1, Linn 9000, Sequential Circuits Drumtrax, Roland R8, a professional kit and a Fairlight CMI IIx.

Audio examples
OK that's all well and good but how does it sound?
- Original
- Roland TR808
- Roland TR909
- Linn LM-1 Demo 1
- Linn LM-1 Demo 2
- Linn LM-1 Demo 3
- Linn 9000
- Sequential Drumtrax
- Roland R8
- Pro Kit
- Fairlight CMI IIx
Cymbals:
The cymbal takes up an entire single EPROM. There are nine choices of Cymbal:
- Roland TR808 Ride
- Roland TR909 Crash
- Linn 9000 Crash
- Linn 9000 Ride
- Pro Kit Crash
- Pro Kit Ride
- Roland R8 China
- Linn LM-1 Crash
- Linn LM-1 Ride
Single EPROMs are 27128 based but it is possible to put two banks worth of sounds in one 27256 EPROM and use a small switch mounted on the EPROM to switch between them. Of course you don't have to switch over all the sounds thereby increasing the sonic palette.
My Star Shine song at the bottom here: www.strellis.co.uk has SCI Drumtraks sounds in my Drumulator triggered over MIDI using a sequencer! Perverse I know :)
